AKC Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) program: an expert-made training program designed to help you and your dog be the best you can be–together.
Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners.
Course Overview
Course length: 6 sessions
Session length: 60 minutes
Format: Private
Evaluation: Mock CGC test in final session
Prerequisites:
• Dog must be minimum 6 months old
• Dog must have basic health clearance
• No active bite history toward humans
Goal: Prepare your dog for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test by teaching the skills and behaviors required for success. This class focuses on preparation only; evaluation and testing are not included.
Who it’s for:
Dogs of all ages who have mastered basic obedience (sit, down, recall)
Owners who want structured guidance and homework for CGC preparation
Dogs who may be nervous or easily distracted in public or around other dogs
What’s Included
6 structured training sessions (60 min each)
Step-by-step homework instructions for daily practice
Printable progress tracker to monitor each skill
Trainer notes and feedback after each session
Positive reinforcement strategies for distractions and focus-building
SKILLS COVERED (AKC OFFICIAL TEST ITEMS)Accepting a Friendly Stranger – Practice polite greetings and calm interactions
Sitting Politely for Petting – Remain calm when approached by others
Appearance & Grooming – Accept handling of paws, ears, and body
Walking on a Loose Leash – Focus on polite walking near people and dogs
Walking Through a Crowd – Confidence-building in mild distractions
Sit & Down on Command – Reliable obedience under distractions
Come When Called – Solid recall, even with moderate distractions
Reaction to Distractions – Tolerance to noises, movement, and environmental stimuli
Supervised Dog Interactions – Calm greetings with other dogs
Controlled Leave-It / Down-Stay Exercises – Self-control and impulse regulation
This is a readiness course, not a guarantee.
Passing the CGC depends on dog behavior, handler consistency, and testing environment. Any trainer who guarantees a pass is being unethical or inexperienced.
